January 2020

While bushfires raged in Victoria, my year started a world away in Western Australia, with the early morning crowd on the beach not far from my parents’ house. Back in Melbourne, my wife Sarah and I spend several days driving to Melbourne’s west when her father’s pancreatic cancer suddenly worsens. He passes away just days after being admitted to hospital, an early emotional toll in a year that will bring many. All the while the bushfire smoke hangs heavy over the city, oppressive heat is eventually broken by summer storms and I tentatively make photos during my lunch break. And of the cat, of course.
